Spoilers within: I want to start this review by saying that I like the series and I think it has real potential even though this is going to be fairly critical. I think there are a couple relatively large issues in this book, the first one being that theres essentially no relevant characters besides the main family. Only 3 new characters really in the whole book with Elora, Holly, and Kriv. Theres no context or personality to antagonists, political rivals, trade partners nothing they are all essentially faceless and only briefly mentioned. My second problem with the book is why I think the first issue is so prevalent, it really gets bogged down in magical theory and research in a very single minded way to the detriment of the rest of the book. There aren't new and interesting characters even minor ones popping up and the story really stalls from that. And my last problem is TJ is just incredibly incompetent in the last 1/3rd of the book, just assuming that he'll be saved and this mass poisoning will be healed in seconds without him there, cutting the assassins arm off like 3 times but still not taking control of his deadly whip?? Just a bunch of weird decisions. Still a good base for the story and I wish the author the best of luck and hope the series does well, but i think these are real issues that aren't specific to just my reading tastes. Read through book 1 and 2 in just a few days. I didn’t want to put them down. This is a great book 2. The world is opening up. The writing is great, with no editing issues. The characters are great and I really enjoy all of the little references to other worlds, genres, and tropes. They are done extremely well and leave me with a big smile every time. If you haven’t read the first grab all of them and get reading.
